A Kosciusko County-based company has launched a high-speed Internet service catering to consumers who have dropped land-line phones.

U4 started offering the standalone DSL service that does not require customers to have a land-line phone number about a month ago, said Rich Hays, the Syracuse-based firm’s marketing director. It is available to northeast Indiana residents who live in areas where Verizon Internet service is offered, including Fort Wayne, New Haven and Angola.

Verizon offers a competing product for customers who have replaced their land lines with cellular phone service, spokesman Lee Gierczynski said.

The potential market for such services is growing.

More than 20 million households nationwide have dropped land lines in favor of cell phones, according to a research study Nielsen Mobile released this month. That’s 17 percent of the nation’s telephone-using households.

About 50 people have signed up for U4’s standalone DSL service, Hays said. The service, also known as dry loop DSL, saves customers the cost of a land-line phone.

“There’s no phone number associated with it,” he said, “so this means you don’t have to have phone service.”

Hays expects more customers to sign up as their existing phone service contracts expire.

U4’s residential service costs $29.95 to $39.95 a month, depending on the speed. Residential dry loop DSL service has top download speeds ranging from 768 kilobits a second to 3 megabits a second, Hays said.

Verizon offers up to 768 kilobits-a-second download speeds for $19.99 a month, Gierczynski said. For $29.99 a month, subscribers can receive speeds of up to 3 megabits a second. The speed is the same as DSL service connected to a phone number.

“This type of service is ideal for a wireless-only user because they can still enjoy all the benefits of Verizon high-speed Internet,” he said.

Internet customers who also receive Verizon’s land-line phone service pay the same amount for their DSL, but Gierczynski said they gain other benefits.

New subscribers ordering the package receive six months of free service under a current promotion. A customer subscribing to standalone DSL service would receive one month of free service, he said.
